When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief, and his friends must confront terrifying forces in order to get him back.
I loved this series. I loved it because it took me back to being a kid in the 80’s. It took me back to some of my all time favourite films – The Goonies, ET, Stand By Me, Commando, Carrie, Close Encounters. It was, for me, the ultimate delicious pleasure and I devoured every last minute.
There’s a few jumps, and it’s pretty creepy in places, but I wouldn’t call it an out-and-out horror. And there’s plenty of warmth, friendship and day time scenes to keep your heart rate down.
Here are my top 5 reasons to watch.
1 Winona Ryder
She was just sublime. For the first 6 episodes she was difficult to watch. As a mum in the midst of the ultimate horror, she was excruciatingly on-the-edge as her anxiety engulfed every scene. And her scenes with Eleven in the bath were so sweet.
This kid is my new favourite ever. Every time he comes on screen he brings the show to life. Gaten Matarazzo who plays him so well, actually suffers from cleidocranial dysplasia in real life so it was written into the show. He’s just as adorable in real life so follow him on Instagram!
3. All the 70-80’s film references
I’ll just leave this awesome film here.
4. The Demogorgan
I won’t spoil the series by posting the *actual* Demogorgan here, but I thought it was fantastic. A little bit Alien, a little bit poltergeist and perfectly creepy.
RIP Barb, you sensible, kind, level headed lady who just wanted to hang with her bestie and get her work done. We noticed you were missing, and we cared.
